Iowa State University first established coursework in "domestic economy" in 1872. The first instructor was Mary B. Welch, wife of University President, Adonijah Welch. In 1875 the Department of Domestic Economy was formed. It was among the earliest domestic economy departments in the United States. Frances Smith retired from her almost 30-year career as a professor in Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences' Department of Education in 1997. She was actively involved with the American Home Economics Association and was instrumental in the creation of the Integration in Home Economics Interest Group in the late 1980s.
